TOWER OF LONDON - THE CITY - ST PAUL'S
The TOWER OF LONDON has been a royal palace, zoo, prison and fortress. Started by William I, each monarch added their own fortifications. Henry VIII’s armour and Crown Jewels are on view. Travelling through the hidden parts of THE CITY before arriving at ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL. Built by Christopher Wren in 1685, services have included the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana.
THE THAMES - GREENWICH - ELTHAM PALACE
A boat along the River THAMES passes London’s great sites before we alight at World Heritage GREENWICH. Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I were born here. The ROYAL OBSERVATORY overlooks the Royal Park and MARITIME MUSEUM. ELTHAM PALACE is part medieval palace, part Art Deco showpiece. In the 1930s, the wealthy Courtauld family transformed it with under floor heating and piped music.
WESTMINSTER ABBEY - BIG BEN - BANQUETING HOUSE
Strolling along the Queen’s ceremonial route, The Mall to WESTMINSTER ABBEY. Regally set near the Houses of Parliament and BIG BEN, the Abbey is the crowning place of kings since 1066 and burial place of 17 monarchs. BANQUETING HOUSE provided entertainment for Charles I, and was scene of his execution. We will see the Royal Parks including the Diana Memorial Fountain.
BUCKINGHAM PALACE - KENSINGTON PALACE
BUCKINGHAM PALACE, is the HM Queen’s official residence in London. The Changing of the Guards takes place in front of the palace. QUEEN’S GALLERY exhibits pieces from the Royal Collection. (In the summer months, the magnificent STATE ROOMS are open). KENSINGTON PALACE was converted into a Royal Palace for William III and Mary in 1689. Visitors see the elegant C18th State Rooms.
WINDSOR CASTLE - ETON - HAMPTON COURT
WINDSOR CASTLE is the world’s largest inhabited castle and the Queen’s home. ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL built in 1475 and where Henry VIII is buried. ETON COLLEGE, one of the country’s premier schools having educated 20 prime ministers. HAMPTON COURT, a Royal Palace since Henry VIII was built by Cardinal Wolsey. It was given to Henry to stave off his displeasure at Wolsey’s rising power.
