Example Classic Scotland Castle Tour

Day 1

EDINBURGH CASTLE - ROYAL MILE - HOLYROODHOUSE

EDINBURGH Castle is most famous of Scotland’s castles dating as a royal residence from the C12th. You will learn it’s history with the Crown Jewels and Stone of Destiny. Strolling along the ROYAL MILE  we explore the many hidden alleys. Half way down is Edinburgh’s High Kirk, ST GILES’ CATHEDRAL. At the bottom is PALACE OF HOLYROODHOUSE – the Queen’s official residence.

Day 2

LINLITHGOW PALACE - STRILING CASTLE AND CITY

LINLITHGOW PALACE is perfectly positioned besides a loch. Built in C15th, it is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots and now tells her story. STIRLING Castle, once the residence of the Scottish Kings and where famous warriors lived like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The exquisite architecture and cobbled streets of the Old Town are testament to Scotland’s past.

Day 3

GLAMIS CASTLE - DUNNOTTAR - CRATHES

GLAMIS Castle is more a French Chateau than a medieval castle and was the childhood home of the late Queen Mother. Set is a spectacular position the ruined remains of DUNNOTTAR Castle tells the story of much of the country’s history. CRATHES Castle is a splendid C16th family tower house with many items of furniture and paintings. The gardens, dating from 1702 are justly famous.

Day 4

BALLINDALLOCH - CAWDOR

BALLINDALLOCH Castle one of the most beautiful and renowned castles in Scotland. Known as the Pearl of the North, it has been the home of the Macpherson family since 1546. CAWDOR Castle is magical place. Made famous by Shakespeare as the home of Macbeth, it is a fairly tale castle over 600 years old. Uniquely, it has three gardens. (You will have the chance to visit a whisky distillery today).

Day 5

CULLODEN - URQUHART CASTLE - EILEAN DONAN

The Battle of CULLODEN, fought in 1746 between the Jacobites, supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie’s claim to the throne and the government. Along the west side of LOCH NESS, URQUHART Castle comes into view. An important historic site with spectacular views of the loch. EILEAN DONAN, the most photographed castle on earth and an icon of Scotland is set amongst unrivalled scenery.

Day 6

ISLE OF SKYE - DUNVEGAN CASTLE - ISLAND LIFE

The jagged ridge of the Cuillin Hills, dominate the Isle of Skye and we will explore this most breathtaking of the Scottish Islands. For 800 years, DUNVEGAN Castle is the home to the Clan MacLeod. The MUSEUM OF ISLAND LIFE tells the story of how crofters lived 100 years ago. Possible excursion include a boat trip to see Sea Eagles or visit one of many specialist artisans.

Day 7

FERRY - GLENFINNAN - CASTLE STALKER

The FERRY to the mainland takes us to Mallaig. There are breathtaking views of the highlands and other islands as we cross. On the spectacular road from ferry is GLENFINNAN – the viaduct was made famous in the Harry Potter movies. Castle STALKER sits majestically on the top of a loch. Seat of the Stewart Clan, it comprises 3 stories and a prison. Access is via boat.

Day 8

GLEN COE - INVERARAY CASTLE - LOCH LOMOND

Through the striking mountain pass of GLEN COE, the scenery is some of the best as we reach the port town of INVERARAY. Home of Clan Campbell, the CASTLE and has fine furniture, artwork, tapestries and armour. This is close to Loch Fyne which is famous for oysters. LOCH LOMOND is Scotland’s most famous water way and LUSS, a lovely C18th village used as a movie and TV sets.

ADDITIONS TO THE ITINERARY

This tour is an example of what can be seen. There are so many castles to visit we can adjust this tour to any places you would like to add. We can theme tours on certain theme like Outlander or monarch such as Mary Queen of Scots. Or, add few extra days exploring the ISLE OF SKYE, the FAR NORTH and some of the islands.
