Between the cities of Manchester, Sheffield and Birmingham lies the Peak District National Park. This is a beautiful area of lush limestone valleys and dramatic and rugged hills.

The Peak District is one of England's most unspoilt regions and over the centuries it has been a very desirable place to live. Today, the great houses like Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are used as movie sets from period dramas to Harry Potter. The River Derwent was also where the industrial revolution began and has many World Heritage Sites along a 15 mile stretch.

Itinerary

Day 1: Chatsworth - Haddon Hall
CHATSWORTH HOUSE is one of England’s most impressive stately houses. Home of the Duke of Devonshire, the current building dates from the C17th. Inside, you will see a spectacular collection of treasures, exquisite interiors and one of the largest collections of art in Europe. Over 105 acres, the gardens are also world famous with the 300 year old cascade and the enormous water fountain. Close is the lovely Peak village of BAKEWELL where the delicious Bakewell tart originated. HADDON HALL is an unspoilt medieval manor house that has changed little in the last 400 years – it is used in many period movies.

Day 2: World Heritage Industrial Sites
In the C18th, the River Derwent was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. The 15 miles of mill complexes along the river form the World Heritage Site, Richard Arkwright was the pioneer of the modern factory and his CROMFORD MILL was the first production unit to harness water power to for large scale production of cotton. MASSON MILL is a fascinating working textile museum incorporates authentic historic working textile machinery. You will the complexes of row houses built by the factory owners for their workers. Crich Tramway Village will allow you to step back in time to the era of the new industrialists.

Day 3: Hardwick Hall - Bolsover Castle
HARDWICK Hall is the masterpiece of Bess of Hardwick - the second most powerful women in the Elizabethan age after the Queen. It is the finest example of C16th architecture in the country and inside rich tapestries, plaster friezes and alabaster fireplaces colour the rooms, culminate in the outstanding Long Gallery. It was also in the last Harry Potter movie. The Cavendish family built the fairytale castle of BOLSOVER CASTLE. Sitting majestically on a hilltop, it is really a stately home with luxurious state rooms, carved fireplaces and miraculously preserved panelling and carefully interiors.

Day 4: High Peaks - Peverill Castle - Castleton
The HIGH PEAK DISTRICT is a unique place of stunning landscapes. The valley of the River Dove cuts through the southern part of the National Park and is regarded as the best scenery in the region. Passing through the hills, PEVERILL CASTLE dominated the surrounding villages. First built of timber, the stone castle was used to control the local area shortly after the Norman Conquest of England. The village of CASTLETON is a rare example of planned medieval settlement. As well as the beautiful hills the underground limestone caves and mines have prized mineral found nowhere else on earth.
