With such a diverse history, England offers a wealth of places to walk and discover. Many cities don't allow cars and this allows us to see the architecture and hear the stories close up. In the countryside, there are numerous battlefields and way marked walks that will interest all ages.

We have listed five examples of possible tours below but these are totally flexible and there are options in each region of England. There are also hundreds of extended paths that offer multi-day hiking tours in the glorious countryside. We will design each tour aruond your interests and capabilities.

Itinerary

Walk 1: White Cliffs of Dover
Our first walk is the stunning cliff coast walk on the WHITE CLIFFS of Dover. As one of hte most spectacular natural features in Britain the cliffs have been a symbol of hope and freedom for centuries. On a clear day you will be able to see France – only 22 miles away. At one end of the walk is DOVER CASTLE. This has always been known as the “Key to England” and the castle offers a spectrum of history from pre-history to the present day. In the castle complex it is said is the oldest standing building in England, a Roman lighthouse and a warren of tunnels beneath the castle formed a control area in WWII.

Walk 2: Battle of Hastings - Portsmouth
Travelling through the rolling Kent countryside, we will arrive at Battle. This is the site of the BATTLE OF HASTINGS where William I defeated Harold to become King of England. A battlefield walk will unveil the story of the day which is arguably the most significant date in English history – 14th October, 1066. At the end of the walk is the ruined abbey, built by William on the site Harold was killed. Travelling along the coast, we will arrive at PORTSMOUTH. This is the home of the British Navy and you will discover the history of the port before seeing the Navy’s most famous ship, Nelson’s victory.

Walk 3: Stonehenge Ritual Landscape
Today we will travel back in time to pre-historic times. STONEHENGE is a World Heritage Site of around 2600 acres. From the oldest part of the site, Durrington Walls we hike onto discover Woodhenge, burial mounds, the Curcus before walking up the Avenue – the ancient ceremonial route to the main Stone circle. To the north, is AVEBURY arguably the most impressive pre-historic site in Britain. We start at the main circle – the largest in the World and enclosing 28 acres including the village of Avebury. The AVENUE forms part of the ritual landscape with WESTKENNET LONG BARROW and SILBURY HILL.

Walk 4: World Heritage City of Bath
BATH is England’s only World Heritage City. Todays walk is along the city’s historic Skyline. 6 miles of walk will reveal outstanding views of the city and the beautiful Cotswolds scenery that surrounds it together with history from the Iron Age to the C18th. En route is PRIOR PARK – a landscape garden hidden in a quiet valley. Created by C18th entrepreneur, Ralph Allen, the highlight is the Palladian Bridge – one of only 4 in the world. Walking towards the city, we will then discover how current city was built – visiting the Circus, Royal Crescent and Queens Square together will the ancient ROMAN BATHS.

Walk 5: Oxford Colleges and City
The Cotswolds border Bath. CASTLE COOMBE is one the quietest yet, prettiest of the villages in this area. The village was important in the wool industry with weavers living in the cottages running down to the river. The walk will start in the historic centre of the villages and after a steep climb give glorious views of the surrounding hills. In the afternoon, we will arrive in OXFORD. With 38 colleges and over 11,000 students the University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English Speaking world. Our walk will unveil the history of the city and the university together with some of the most important Alumni.
