Itinerary

Day 1: Lyme Regis - World Heritage Coast
The south east coast of Devon is part of England’s only natural heritage site, the JURASSIC COAST. The first stop on our tour is FORDE ABBEY. The former Cistercian abbey is a real treasure with more than 900 years of history set in 30 acres of award winning gardens. A few miles towards the coast is LYME REGIS, famous for its geology and fossils. Mary Anning lived in the town – she was the first fossil collector. We will take the drive to the other towns and villages in the area and stop at places like Beer and Sidmouth before our last stop at A LA RONDE. This is a unique 16 sided building filled with ancient artefacts.

Day 2: Exeter - Greenways - Burgh Island
The capital of Devon is EXETER. The city has a prehistoric history and dominated by the Norman Cathedral. The Cathedral as started in 1114 but was remodelled later to form the best example of decorated Gothic architecture. This is the heart of the city and many of the buildings are medieval. In this area are England’s most popular seaside resorts. TORQUAY has associations with Agatha Christie and her home, GREENWAYS is close by. The house is kept as it was in the 1950s when she was alive. Along the coast is BURGH ISLAND – a magical Art Deco island retreat – a few hundred yards offshore.

Day 3: Plymouth - Dartmoor - Buckland
PLYMOUTH is Devon’s largest city. The HOE is the departure place for the 102 Pilgrim Fathers in 1620 and is surrounded by history. A short walking tour will introduce you to this important sea port. One of Devon's National Parks, is an upland area of DARTMOOR. This is southern England’s largest area of upland wilderness with the 365 square miles of park. Numerous pre-historic stone settlements and many beautiful villages to explore. Set on the south of the moor is BUCKLAND ABBEY. This was the home of Sir Francis Drake and the abbey rooms show how he changed the fate of England.

Day 4: Dunster Castle - Lynmouth - Exmoor
EXMOOR is Devon’s other National Park. With more farmland and set against the sea, it is very different to Dartmoor. DUNSTER is at the west side of the moor. For 1000 years this romantic fortress has had a turbulent history and it was remodelled by the famous architect Salvin, in the C19th. The coast to the west is very beautiful and we can explore some of the tiny villages and coves that hug the beaches. We will arrive at lovely town of LYNMOUTH – made famous by Lorna Doone. The highest point in the moor is Dunkery Beacon and close-by is TARR STEPS – a stone bridge over a tiny river, a tranquil spot.
