Tuesday, May 12, 2015

A tour of sites associated with Harry Potter can take you to all four corners of Great Britain, from London to the highlands of Scotland. Such a tour is enjoyed not only by Harry Potter fans but by all who enjoy the varied landscape of Britain and the historical castles and houses in which the movies were filmed.

Harry Potter Tour

A great Start is London, where you can begin at the Pinewood studios, which houses the Harry Potter Experience. You can visit movie locations around London including Gringott’s bank, Diagon Alley, Platform 9 ¾ and even meet the snake who taught Harry to speak parseltongue.

In the university city of Oxford you see one of the locations used as Hogwarts – Christ Church College and see the dining room here, which inspired the designers of the dining hall in Hogwarts. From here the tour can take you northwards to Scotland, passing Alnwick Castle, also used as Hogwarts. This great castle is known as ‘The Windsor of the North’ and is home to the Duke of Northumberland. In Edinburgh you visit ‘The Elephant’ café where J.K. Rowling created Harry Potter and you can stay in the Balmoral Hotel where she finished the last of the books. Travelling into the wild Highlands you can climb the side of Glen Coe to reach the site of Hagrid’s hut and at Fort William you climb aboard the Jacobite Steam train, used as the Hogwarts Express.
